ENVIRONMENT

Rail is one of the most environmentally friendly modes of transport worldwide. However, we are not resting on our laurels, but are taking on additional responsibility.

Our contribution to a sustainable future:

  • Upcycling instead of buying new through:
    • Retrofits of track-laying machines to significantly extend their life cycle
    • Refurbishment, repair, and reuse of components such as tamping units, wheel sets, bogies, and much more, thereby conserving resources
  • Large proportion of natural open space at the Leverkusen site to promote biodiversity and flora and fauna
  • Own beehives for ecological diversity
  • Biodiversity on the site: habitat for bees, toads, tadpoles, lizards, and more
  • Creation and maintenance of species-rich flower meadows to promote ecological diversity
  • Use of geothermal heat pumps for energy-efficient heating and cooling technology
  • Firefighting water supply through sustainable rainwater utilization
  • Biological wastewater treatment
  • Daylight-dependent LED lighting and thus significant energy savings
  • Continuous monitoring of our carbon footprint

Planting trees for biodiversity and climate

Together with the NGO Wildlife Fruits, we support the reforestation of former pasture land in Costa Rica.

In this way, we not only bind CO₂, but also create valuable habitats for numerous animal species. This enables us to contribute to restoring ecological balance and promoting biodiversity.

We know the founder of Wildlife Fruits personally and appreciate his long-standing commitment. That’s why we are delighted to actively support the project: for every retrofit project completed, we donate a tree – as a thank you to our customers and as an investment in a future worth living for us all.

GOVERNANCE

PRS operates internationally with some of its services. Our internal guidelines on the environment, climate, and safety ensure that sustainability is not just a concept on paper.
